Garten der Kulturen

A garden is the most honest stage there is. Nobody bought a ticket, nobody has to stay. Whoever stops, stops for the music.

Garden courtyard with rows of simple wooden chairs on gravel under old trees, an open wooden pavilion behind.

Generated mood images — not photographs of the programmes or people named here.

Garten der Kulturen is programming in public space: an afternoon, an evening, music between trees instead of between walls. The challenge is not the line-up but the place — wind, daylight, children, passers-by, no curtain to force attention.

Programmes for outdoors are built differently: a quiet opening, no long announcements, pieces that carry across thirty metres, and an arc that pulls forward instead of explaining backwards. Technology, neighbours, permits and a weather plan are part of the curating for me, not a separate department.

For municipalities, neighbourhood centres, gardens and courtyards this is the most accessible way to turn a place into a programme — and a neighbourhood into an audience.

My role

  • Programming for open city space instead of the concert hall
  • Choosing line-ups that carry without heavy stage technology
  • Coordinating technology, neighbours and weather planning
  • Being on site on the day of the event

Next step

Shall we build something like this together?

Tell me in three steps what you have in mind — format, setting, date. I get back to you personally.
